Our Technology
Oral Cancer Screening
Our office utilizes the Vel-Scope oral cancer screening system to more effectively identify defective tissue or cancerous cells. The Vel-Scope uses fluorescence visualization technology, a light that reflects back as a black or dark area wherever defective tissue or cancerous cells exist.
Oral Cancer is the sixth most common form of cancer in the United States; over 30,000 patients a year are diagnosed with Oral Cancer. The risk factors of Oral Cancer include tobacco use, frequent and/or excessive alcohol consumption, a compromised immune system, past history of cancer, and the presence of the HPV virus (human papilloma virus). However, 25% of all newly diagnosed cases have been in patients under the age of forty with none of the risk factors listed above. A typical Oral Cancer screening and exam consist of a visual and manual examination of the neck, head and oral cavity. The examination of the oral cavity is a white light inspection of the tongue, throat, glands and soft tissues. Digital Radiology
Our office utilizes digital radiology for all patient x-ray imaging. Digital radiology utilizes significantly less radiation than traditional x-rays. This technology also provides us with immediate digital images without any chemical processing time. Digital images can also be easily enhanced and transferred.
Neks D-Carie Mini Detection Device
 The D-Carie Mini Detection Device assists dentists in identifying caries in teeth. The device uses LED light technology to help us in determining the severity of a tooth stain, by providing third dimension views. This view provides Dr. Gibbons with more information as to whether the tooth needs to be treated or simply monitored.
